Service Area

Service Area

A geographic area where the plan accepts members. The plan may limit membership based on where people live. For plans that limit which doctors and hospitals a beneficiary may use, it’s also generally the area where a beneficiary can get routine (non-emergency) services. The plan may disenroll the beneficiary if they move out of the plan’s service area.

  • A service area is the geographic area in which a health insurance plan is available to provide coverage to its beneficiaries. In the context of Medicare, service areas may apply to certain types of coverage, such as Medicare Advantage plans and certain Medicare Part D PDPs.
  • Under Original Medicare (consisting of Part A and Part B), beneficiaries are generally free to receive medical care from any healthcare provider who accepts Medicare and who is willing to treat them, regardless of the provider’s location.
  • However, Medicare Advantage plans (private health insurance plans that are an alternative to Original Medicare) and certain Medicare Part D PDPs may have service area restrictions. This means that beneficiaries may be required to receive their care from providers within a certain geographic area in order for their care to be covered under the plan.
  • It’s important for beneficiaries to understand the service area restrictions of their Medicare coverage and to carefully consider their options when choosing a plan. Beneficiaries should also be aware that they may be responsible for paying for care received outside of their plan’s service area unless it is an emergency.
